And finally... name and shame

A Peruvian man named Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores has been elected mayor of a small Andean district, winning by 25 votes – on a centre-left party ticket.

The 45-year-old Ahora Nación candidate received 229 votes, representing 34.5 per cent of the 663 valid ballots cast in Queropalca, in the Huánuco department north of Lima. His closest rival, Gaspar Benilde Osorio Zambrano of Popular Renewal Peru, received 204 votes.

The district has an estimated population of just over 730, according to official 2024 data.

Simeón Flores is not Peru’s first elected Hitler. Hitler Alba, of the centre-right We Are Peru party, served as mayor of Yungar between 2011 and 2014. He campaigned under the slogans “Hitler returns” and “Hitler with the people”, describing himself as “the good Hitler”.

Hitler Saavedra, a surgeon and lawmaker, represented We Are Peru in Congress from 2021 until his death in 2024, aged 46.

Peruvians sometimes give their children unusual or historically controversial names.
