An athlete who defrauded a teammate has now also beaten her victim to a gold medal at the Winter Olympics.

Julia Simon came first in the women’s 15km biathlon – which combines skiing and rifle shooting. Her victim and teammate, Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, came in 80th place.

Simon was convicted last October of making online purchases of more than €2,000 using Braisaz-Bouchet’s credit card as well as that of the French team’s physiotherapist, The Guardian reports.

She initially denied the offences, but pleaded guilty after investigators found the card details on her phone and was slapped with a €15,000 fine and a three-month suspended sentence.

Simon later said: “I confess the accusations but I don’t remember committing them. It’s like a blackout.”

A six-month ban imposed by the French Ski Federation was suspended for five months, allowing Simon to take part in most events during the Winter Olympics – and bring home the gold medal for France.

Braisaz-Bouchet, for her part, reported receiving extensive online abuse after the crimes came to light.
