And finally… his sister’s keeper

And finally... his sister's keeper

A high-tech facial recognition system introduced by the mayor of São Paulo has led to his own sister’s identification and arrest for an alleged crime.

The introduction of the “Smart Sampa” system was one of the key policy achievements of Ricardo Nunes’ administration, which has run the city since 2021.

Launched in 2024, the system uses imagery from more than 30,000 cameras spread across the city to track down fugitives and missing people.

Mr Nunes’ sister, Janaina Reis Miron, was arrested yesterday after being identified by Smart Sampa cameras, Brazilian news website g1 reports.

A lawyer, she was subject to two arrest warrants in connection with convictions for drink driving, contempt of court and bodily injury.

She is set to appear in court today.
