And finally… fire-starting GDL graduate douses flames with urine and fridge
An aspiring lawyer started a bonfire on the roof of his flat after a row with a friend then attempted to douse the flames – with bottles of urine and a fridge.
Swansea Magistrates Court heard how Andre Figueiredo, 23, threw items onto the fire while ignoring officers’ calls to allow them into the building.
When officers gained access via the back of the building Mr Figueiredo was found in his bed fully clothed and pretending to be asleep.
They managed to put out the fire before arresting the law graduate.
He told police he had been drinking in Swansea city centre with a friend before he returned to his flat.
However, disappointed that his friend was moving away from Swansea he decided to set fire to his t-shirt on the roof of the building.
He then tried to put the flames out with urine and a fridge.
Mr Figueiredo pleaded guilty to one count of arson.
Matt Henson, in mitigation, said Mr Figueiredo understood he had acted “recklessly and foolishly” after having a row with his friend.
He added Mr Figueiredo had moved to the UK in 2006 as a child unable to speak English and had gone on to obtain a 2:1 in Economics as well as the GDL at Swansea University with a view to entering the legal or financial professions.
Mr Henson said: “He wants to secure a career in the law or in the financial services — but these incidents have scuppered those plans.
“A conviction for arson on his record is seriously going to dent his prospects.”
Mr Figueiredo was granted bail, with matters being adjourned for two weeks to allow preparation of probation reports.
