Police have said human urine, rat faeces and arsenic are some of the substances contained in fake beauty products.
Counterfeit perfume, make-up, sun cream and other goods are being brought to the attention of the general public in a campaign by City of London Police called “Wake up – don’t fake up!”.
Ninety million pounds is spent every year in the UK on fake goods with the sale of them increasing as more people buy goods online.
Specifically, fake beauty products are becoming more common as people cannot test their authenticity when buying over the internet.
The police said lab tests have revealed that some counterfeit perfume contains toxins and even human urine,
In addition, some fake cosmetics include arsenic, lead and mercury.
Detective superintendent Maria Woodall at City of London Police, said: “Our general rule is; if it seems too good to be true then it probably is.
“Not only could these products have serious health implications but by buying from a rogue site or dealer online, your personal and financial information is also at risk.”
