Money Inc estimates the Mississippi lawyer’s wealth at 1.7 billion dollars. The average earning for a lawyer in the US is $133,000 a year.

Scruggs made his fortune as a leading figure in the huge tobacco and asbestos litigation of the 1990’s.

But in 2008, Scruggs now 70, was jailed for judicial corruption and served six years in a federal prison but retained his fortune.

He now runs a charity helping disadvantaged adults obtain the equivalent of a high school education.
