Emile Wickham and three of his friends were told by a waiter that paying upfront was restaurant policy, but they asked other diners and discovered they were the only customers asked to do so.

He complained about the Toronto restaurant to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, alleging that they had been racially profiled.

Nearly four years later, the tribunal has finally ruled in his favour that the restaurant did discriminate against the group in 2014.

The tribunal ordered Hong Shing Chinese Restaurant to pay $10,000 CAD (£5,723) in damages.
