However, he made the mistake of stopping in the back garden to make sure his new shoes were the right size. At this point a neighbour took a photo of Mr Ross, whose red boxer shorts were visible above his jeans.

Officer Russell Harris said that while returning from a canvass of the local area he saw someone putting their bin out, someone with “bright red underwear”.

Mr Ross was caught.

“I just happened to sit in the car for a moment and in my rear view mirror about 500 hundred yards away I see a guy bending over putting garbage bags down and what do I see, lo and behold, I see red underwear standing out,” Mr Harris said.

However, the officer acknowledged that young men bearing their underwear was a common sight in Hempstead.

“If he would have gone home and put a belt on, I probably wouldn’t have noticed him.”
