And finally… called to account

A would-be bank thief was not thinking ahead when he asked a cashier to deposit money directly into his account.

Paul Neaverson, 61, who had no previous convictions, went into a branch of NatWest in Kent and instructed the cashier to put £500 into his account before brandishing a knife.

The employee pressed the alarm button while Mr Neaverson turned and ran off.

He then attempted to rob a branch of HSBC, a mere 400ft away before police caught him.

Speaking in court about his failed attempts at bank robbery, his defence lawyer said: “It was ridiculous. It only had one ending.

“He now finds himself staring down the barrel of a very long sentence.”

Maidstone Crown Court heard he wanted the money so he could fly to Corfu for an interview as a golf coach.

He was jailed for two years after pleading guilty to the attempted robberies as well as possession of a blade.
