And finally… Born Free but remanded in custody
A man who sang Born Free when he appeared in a court in Derry was remanded in custody.
Nicholas Roper, 49, from County Cork, was arrested and charged with causing disorderly behaviour in a hospital.
But when his case was called at the magistrate’s court the police sergeant informed the district judge, Barney McElholm, that the defendant had taken his clothes off in the police van and was refusing to enter the court.
The judge said he would hold the hearing outside the police van if necessary.
Some time later the defendant appeared in the dock having dressed.
However, as the court clerk began reading out the charge of disorderly behaviour, Mr Roper started singing Born Free and continued to throughout the hearing – ignoring any questions directed at him.
The judge said because of the presumption of innocence a “not guilty” plea would be entered on the defendant’s behalf.
Mr Roper continued to sing and ignored other questions. He was remanded in custody until July 20th.
