And finally… argument without conviction
A championship-winning debate team from Harvard University was left humiliated after losing to a team of New York prison inmates.
Three Harvard students faced down a team of three Clinton Correction Facility inmates in an hour-long debate last month.
The inmates argued in favour of the motion: “Public schools in the US should have the ability to deny enrollment to undocumented students.”
They admitted it was difficult to do - as they fiercely disagreed with it.
Afterwards, three judges ruled that the inmates had won, catching the Harvard team off-guard with an unexpected line of argument.
Alex Hall, a 31-year old inmate convicted of manslaughter, told the Wall Street Journalafterwards: “We might not be as naturally rhetorically gifted, but we work really hard.”
Carlos Polanco, 31, also convicted of manslaughter, was pleased with the victory, but told the newspaper he would never bar a child from school.
