And finally… a junkie’s dozen

A mother whose daughter turned 18 recently decided that celebrating the big day with a limousine and party would not be enough – so she bought 12 bags of cocaine to liven things up.

Prosecutors at Maidstone Crown Court said Nicola Austen, 37, bought 8.65 grams worth of the drug for the party.

She was handed a nine-month suspended sentence and given 250 hours of unpaid work South West News Service reports.

Craig Evans, prosecuting, said that Ms Austen and her daughter were headed to London to celebrate the birthday, saying: “They were going to London in a limousine and she wanted to make sure they had a good time.”

However, the pair were stopped by police before they could snort some of the white stuff.

Officers attended Ms Austen’s house for a chat, with a police dog sniffing out the drugs.

She already had six previous convictions including one for amphetamine possession in 2010.

Ms Austen admitted she had gotten it for her daughter’s birthday but she avoided prison as the judge thought her young son would suffer if she were imprisoned.
