£200,000 confiscation order for mechanic

Iain Wilson, 61, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment in January after he was found guilty of income tax and National Insurance fraud.

An investigation by HMRC discovered that Mr Wilson, who owns an MOT business in East Kilbride, had failed to reveal his true income in self-assessment tax returns.

He avoided paying £208,912 in tax between 2009 and 2014.

A confiscation order for repayment of the full sum of money was made at Hamilton Sheriff Court today.

Liam Murphy, procurator fiscal for specialist casework, said: “Iain Wilson took advantage of the self-assessment tax system to defraud the public purse of a significant amount of money.

“He is now not only serving a prison sentence for those offences but will have to return all of the money he failed to declare.”
