Legal experts to provide masterclass on risk management for lawyers

Douglas Mill

A trio of legal experts is running a seminar in Stirling on risk management this October.

Douglas Mill, Brian O’Neill and Austin Lafferty will host an interactive seminar on risk management for practitioners that will look at ways to recognise, minimise and avoid risk.

Providing 7 hours of CPD, it draws on the extensive professional experience of three providers with differing professional backgrounds and perspectives on current risk topics.

Douglas Mill spent 18 years in private practice and 12 years as Law Society of Scotland CEO during which time he was extensively involved in master policy issues.

He provides consulting services to the profession and in the last 12 years has acted for over 130 law firms. He will look at risk management generally and concentrate on negligence, financial and client handling skills.

Brian O’Neill is a former solicitor who left the profession to work in legal IT. He has developed an IT consultancy service for solicitors as well as establishing The Styles Bank which provides legal styles templates, and Client Communications which helps law firms keep in touch with their clients on a regular basis between transactions.

Working with tens of thousands of pieces of e-mail data each month means he takes data security very seriously. He advises many firms on GDPR compliance requirements and the Data Protection Act 2018, providing a series of templates to assist with the challenge of compliance. He will discuss avoiding cybercriminals.

Austin Lafferty, a past president of LSS, is currently convenor of the Professional Practice Committee, and a regular contributor to CPD events. He will draw on his experience of running a busy, successful high street practice and will deal with the additional problems of a branch office network.

He has developed his firm’s procedures on the various risks that affect such firms-money laundering, credit and fee control, GDPR and Registers penalties. Using his considerable media experience, Austin will share his experience in handling reputational risk-both with clients and the wider world.

The event will be held at Stirling Court Hotel on Tuesday, 8th October 2019.

The delegate rate, including all meals, materials etc is £195 inc VAT per solicitor. Firms can send two delegates for £295. All interested should e-mail drm@douglasmillconsulting.co.uk
