Women in the Law UK, the networking organisation designed to encourage, inspire and support the next generation of lawyers and women in business, held its Glasgow launch on Wednesday at the offices of Harper Macleod.

The first event in the city – entitled “Progressing your career with confidence” – heard from a panel of female lawyers in a Question Time-style session chaired by Amy Walsh, senior associate at Harper Macleod and an ambassador for Women in the Law UK.

She was joined by Nicola Gordon, head of the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland, Naomi Pryde, partner and head of litigation at DWF in Edinburgh, and Pamela Niven, partner and a member of the Harper Macleod management board.

With the focus on what it takes for women to progress their career in various arms of the law, the panellists tackled topics ranging from decision making early in your career to having the confidence to overcome ‘imposter syndrome’ and know you are good enough to make it.

The importance of young female partners was also discussed, and the speakers gave some great insight into what ‘success’ looks like – whether that’s getting to the top, creating a sustainable career or something else altogether. The event also looked at what law firms and other organisations can and should do to encourage and support career progression for women.

Ms Walsh said: “I’d like to thank everyone who attended the event, which provided a fascinating discussion on the state of play for women in the law, and recognised the success that has been achieved.

“We were really fortunate to get the support of such a great panel of speakers, and are already looking forward to the next one.”
