Civil Legal Assistance Office


Starting salary £57,950 within a pay band up to £67,410 (pay award pending)

Pro rata if part-time 

We are currently seeking to recruit Head of Service (grade 8) of the Civil Legal Assistance Office (CLAO).

Whilst the role is based in Edinburgh the post holder will be required to undertake regular travel (including some overnight stays) to our other CLAO offices in Inverness, Argyll & Bute and Aberdeen. All travel will be undertaken in line with SLAB travel and travel related policies.    

This appointment is permanent. A 6% contributory defined benefit pension scheme is in operation, the terms of which are in line with public service pension schemes. 

Successful candidates will be subject to SLAB’s standard security checks which include the requirement for a current PVG Disclosure from Disclosure Scotland. Further to SLAB’s standard security checks, due to the nature of this post, successful candidates will be required to complete and pass additional security checks.

The CLAO service operates through a mix of casework; referral to other providers of legal assistance and support; second tier support to other providers (including training); and partnership/development project working with local and national organisations operating in the defined geographical areas. About the role

With responsibility and accountability for the operational management of the CLAO service, the purpose of this role is to manage and lead the CLAO service to deliver high quality service for clients.  While not generally carrying your own caseload, as an experienced solicitor you will act as a reference point for colleagues across the network in respect of casework, advising on ethical and professional practice issues and assisting in complex case work.

This post is permanent on a full time basis.
