SLCC Consumer Panel responds to legal regulation review

The Scottish Legal Complaints Commission Consumer Panel has published its response to the call for evidence from the independent review of legal regulation in Scotland.

In launching it’s response, the panel’s chair, Carol Brennan, said: “We believe that there is a need for stakeholders to put consumers at the heart of future developments. We hope that the review will result in a greatly improved system for consumer complaints which results in much faster processing and responses, and where redress is quickly obtained where services have fallen short of standards.

“We very much appreciated the opportunity to meet with members of the review panel at an early stage and we look forward to contributing actively to developing the proposals which the review panel will produce later this year.”

The Scottish Legal Complaints Commission (SLCC) last week encouraged the independent review to set a clear single aim for future policy and legislative work.

Its suggestions included:

  • a single framework act of Parliament for legal regulation;
  • a greater focus on consumer risk and improving quality;
  • innovation and informed decision making;
  • increasing trust and confidence; and
  • ensuring better consumer protection and faster redress
  • Neil Stevenson, CEO, said: “For two years we have been calling for major reform. From a slow start there is a growing consensus that a radical shakeup is needed, and this momentum should empower the review group to present ambitious proposals for change which could benefit the public and the legal sector for generations to come.”
