SEMLA announces student opportunity with energy giant Shell

The Scottish Ethnic Minorities Lawyers Association (SEMLA) has announced an opportunity for two of its student members, in conjunction with Shell International Limited, part of the multinational energy company.

Between Tuesday 18 and Friday 21 August 2020, Shell’s in-house legal team, Shell Legal, is offering two students the opportunity to attend the following virtual events which are designed to help participating students equip themselves with the skills they need to secure a training contract:

A session on what Shell does and how Shell Legal helps; Mock training contract telephone interview, with feedback; A session with Eversheds Sutherland LLP on the trainee experience; A session on opportunities while you wait for a training contract; and One-to-one call with a ‘legal buddy’ who will be happy to chat to you and answer any questions you may have about the legal profession.

This unpaid opportunity is open to current students who have completed the first or second year of the LLB or the first year of the accelerated LLB degree this year at a Scottish university. Students who have not yet secured a training contract will benefit most from the opportunity (although please note Shell Legal does not itself offer training contracts).

Interested students should send their application to Naeema Sajid of SEMLA (naeemaysajid@gmail.com) with the subject “Shell Virtual Scheme”. The application should consist of your CV and a statement of 200 words or less explaining:

  • Why you are interested in becoming a lawyer;
  • Why you would like to apply for Shell Legal virtual scheme;
  • What interests you about Shell’s work; and
  • Why the experience would be useful to you.
    • For example, if you have not yet had work experience in the legal sector.

Committee member Naeema Sajid said: “This is an exceptional opportunity for our members to gain experience in a global, world-renowned organisation whilst also gaining invaluable insight into the role of an in-house solicitor.

“Being an in-house solicitor has many challenges but also many opportunities, one of which lies in being directly involved in the business of the organisation. SEMLA is delighted to be collaborating with Shell International Limited on this initiative, particularly during these challenging times.”

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 29th July 2020.
