Lord Brodie has retired from the bench.

Lord Brodie was appointed a judge of the Supreme Courts in 2002 and was appointed to the Inner House in November 2012.

He is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh (LLB) and the University of Virginia (LLM).

He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1976 and was standing junior counsel to the Ministry of Defence (procurement) and to the Health and Safety at Work Executive from 1983 to 1987.

He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1987. He was called to the English bar (Lincoln’s Inn) in 1991. He was part-time chairman of the Industrial Tribunal from 1987 to 1991 and part-time chairman of the Medical Appeal Tribunal from 1991 to 1996. He served as advocate depute from 1997 to 1999. In 2002 he was appointed part-time chairman of the Employment Tribunal.
