Human trafficking under the spotlight in special Tumbling Lassie year

Maryam Labaki

Human trafficking is once again under the spotlight in a series of events this year inspired by the case of the Tumbling Lassie.

Writing in the Scottish Legal News Annual Review 2018, advocate Maryam Labaki details the beginnings of Scotland’s ant-trafficking regime and the steps lawyers have taken to raise awareness and funds for charities dealing with the problem.

“The Tumbling Lassie Committee supports TARA domestically and International Justice Mission who fight against human trafficking and slavery on a global level. Slavery is illegal worldwide but this has not, tragically, prevented millions still being held in actual or effective slavery, across the globe and even in Scotland. These charities continue the struggle to end slavery and people trafficking and to support modern survivors of these crimes as they recover from their ordeals,” she writes.

And this year’s Tumbling Lassie Ball – which is now sold out – is particularly special as it will feature the world premier of an operetta written by Alexander McCall Smith.
