England: Judge hears case over the phone in legal first
A judge has become the first to oversee a public court hearing by telephone.
At the Court of Appeal in London, Sir Andrew McFarlane had a conference call with two litigants, a man in Israel and a woman in England, for about an hour.
The connection to the woman was lost at one point.
A member of the court staff, as well as two journalists, were at the hearing, with a group of tourists walking in at one point to sit on the public benches.
The hearing was heard at the Court of Protection, a specialist court dealing with issues for people who lack mental capacity to make decisions.
In this particular case, Sir Andrew had been asked to make decisions for a woman with learning disabilities.
