Dundee mooters appear before Lord Hodge at Supreme Court

On Wednesday 28 March students and staff from the Law School at the University of Dundee travelled to London to attend the university’s annual Mooting Championship final at the Supreme Court.

The event started with a private tour of the Supreme Court building, including its library, which is normally out-of-bounds to the public, and a presentation about the history of the court and the building housing it.

Law undergraduates Evana Ferguson, Giorgio Ventisei, David Durie, and George Dick took part in the moot, presenting their arguments in Court One to Lord Hodge and his judicial assistant Caragh Nimmo.

The Scots property law moot problem, drafted by Sarah King, a lecturer at Dundee Law School, looked at the ancillary servitude of parking.

Handing down his judgment, Lord Hodge announced that David Durie and George Dick were the victors. Mr Durie, who acted as senior counsel for the winning team said: “Going to the Supreme Court was an experience I will never forget. Being able to compete before Lord Hodge at the highest court in the land as a second year law student was such a valuable experience, which has strengthened how much I want to engage with the law.”
