The 2019-20 academic year has been another successful one for the Edinburgh University Mooting Society. Earlier this month it held the finals of both of its internal competitions: the Pinsent Masons Junior Mooting Competition, exclusively for first year students; and the LexisNexis Senior Mooting Competition for second, third and fourth year students.

Both finals were held in Parliament House, with Lord Mulholland presiding.

The junior final this year was contested by Jamie Perriam, Ernest Tsui, Natalie Gower and Jessie Au Yeong. They argued a problem on contact and unjustified enrichment, drafted by Professor Hector MacQueen.

The problem was whether an author was in breach of a contract for failing to offer a publisher the chance to rectify poor work, and whether the author had been unjustifiably enriched by the work they had done so far, albeit shoddily done.

Lord Mulholland decided in favour of the pursuers and gave the win to Messrs Perriam and Tsui.

The senior final was held the following evening but concerned a criminal appeal against conviction. Stuart Anderson and Stuart Coleman acted for the appellant whilst Fraser Rodger and Valentin Pyataev acted for the Crown.

The appeal was a novel one on whether MacAngus liability for a death following reckless drug supply could apply to a charge of being concerned in the supply of psychoactive substances.

Lord Mulholland narrowly upheld the conviction and handed the win to Messrs Rodger and Pyataev for the Crown.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh held the Alexander Stone National Moot trophy. Rachel Winfield and Richard Anderson saw off RGU at their semi-final in Aberdeen to make it through to the Alexander Stone final in Glasgow. Sadly, the final has been postponed due to the lockdown.

The society said it was “extremely grateful to all those from the profession, and to our sponsors, who have assisted us this academic year”.
