The next of the Royal Philosophical Society of Glasgow lectures in the 216th series will be held tomorrow at Strathclyde University.

The speaker, Professor Lord Peter Hennessy will be speaking on the subject of ‘Writing the history of one’s own times’.

Peter Hennessy, Baron Hennessy of Nympsfield, is an historian and academic specialising in the history of government. As a journalist for over 20 years – with spells on The Times, The Financial Times and The Economist – he unearthed the hidden wiring of the constitution and the power of the machinery of government in Britain.

Those themes remained at the heart of his research and teaching at Queen Mary. Since moving to academia in 1992 his aim has been to write the history of his own country, in his own times, for academic and public audiences alike.

He has been Attlee Professor of Contemporary British History at Queen Mary College, University of London since 2001

Lord Hennessy will be looking at all the big geopolitical shifts in the UK’s position in the world since 1945 and setting Brexit in the context of that. He will also be giving an assessment of the current condition of UK politics.
