The Scottish Government’s Help to Buy (Scotland) Affordable New Build Scheme and the LIFT Open Market Shared Equity Scheme (OMSE) offer affordable home ownership through an equity loan from the Scottish Government.
Link administers Help to Buy in certain areas and OMSE across the whole of Scotland.
New variants of the schemes were introduced in October 2017 for applicants over the age of 60. This was in recognition of the need to help older people into suitable housing earlier, the usual requirement to take out a mortgage to access the schemes has been removed.
Applicants of any age can still apply through the original schemes however those aged 60 or over not using a mortgage need to demonstrate a housing need due to:
- Under-occupation of their present home, or
- Unsuitable present home e.g. due to stairs, or a
- Need to move closer to family, friends or other sources of care and support.
Separate online application forms are available on Link’s website.
Applications are responded to within five working days and the process of applying is straightforward. 100% of Link’s Help to Buy customers said they would recommend it.
