West Lothian Council is one of Scotland’s most successful local authorities and is based in Livingston.
Legal Services provides comprehensive legal and committee services to the council and is made up of four teams – Committee Services, Licensing, Litigation, and Property/Planning.
This is a full time permanent post although job share arrangements may be considered.
This is a varied and challenging role as part of a small and busy team. The post holder will be required to assist with the timely provision of a full range of quality legal services to the Council, its committees, members and officers. In particular, they shall undertake all aspects of general litigation and advisory work including advising on contractual issues, social policy children and adult business, Education law, and general debt recovery business. There may be a requirement to support the delivery of Employment law and policy related issues. They will also be required to undertake other areas of work, as may be allocated to them and required to assist the Chief Solicitor in providing a quality legal service that meets customer expectations. The post may involve clerking regulatory or other committees, and whilst experience is desirable, full training will be given.
The post is suitable for and will be of interest to an enthusiastic and motivated solicitor seeking a position which brings the unique challenges of being an in house legal adviser. The successful candidate will be client focussed and proactive in the identification of issues relevant to council services.
In addition to the technical competencies required the successful candidate will have excellent communication and team working skills. They will deliver advice to team members, council officers and elected members in a clear and concise manner, demonstrate a commitment to excellence in customer service and a flexible approach to meeting changing demands and priorities. They will contribute to and participate in the Council’s training programme for colleagues and client services.
The skills and experience you must have:
- LLB Degree or Equivalent
- Post Graduate Diploma
- Membership of the Law Society of Scotland with a current unrestricted Practising Certificate
- Post-qualifying planning and general commercial conveyancing experience
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Basic knowledge of law relating to a local authority
- Excellent interpersonal and presentational skills
- IT experience/aptitude
